The Best Tips for Liver Detox and Fat Loss

February 24, 2019 by Amber

this post

Doing a liver detox for fat loss is one of the best ways to lose weight, as a healthy liver that removes waste products and is free of fat buildup is essential for your overall health.

Liver health and weight loss are like two peas in a pod. The two go hand in hand. When someone has reached their personal fat threshold and ability to safely store fat, excess calories coming in can lead to the accumulation of fat in the liver which impairs the ability of the liver to function and detox effectively.

The liver is either storing food as energy or burning stored fat and glycogen. Too many empty calories coming and not enough time to burn stored fat can cause fatty liver. To lose weight, one must deplete the stored glycogen and fat in the liver, as the body often accesses the fuel in the liver before turning to body fat.

The Link Between Fatty Liver and Weight Gain

The body is constantly burning a little fuel. But it receives a lot of energy at once with each meal. The liver has to store incoming food in the form and glycogen and triglycerides (fat) in the liver.

The liver acts as a pantry for your body to store vitamins, minerals, fat, and sugar for a later date. Your liver releases stored glycogen between meals to maintain blood sugar balance. A beautiful balance exists where you eat, store food as glycogen or fat then release stored fat and glycogen as needed.

But, the liver can become overloaded with too much fuel coming in. As a result of too much food always coming in, the liver starts to become clogged and filled with triglycerides. Too much fat stored in the liver leads to fatty liver and insulin resistance.

When the liver becomes fatty and glycogen liver stores are full there is no more room to store incoming food in the liver. So instead, the incoming fuel is stored as body fat, causing weight gain.

Depleting glycogen stores in the liver and supporting the transportation of fats out of the liver ensures that their is storage space available in the liver the next time food is consumed.

Weight gain in the stomach is a sign of fatty liver. Thus, reversing fatty liver is vital to losing belly fat. If you notice that your weight gain is in the stomach, your liver is likely fatty. When doing a liver detox for weight loss and fatty liver, the liver needs time to burn through glycogen and fat stores in the liver.

Fatty liver detox for weight loss requires the avoidance of excessive food consumption, especially fried foods, and saturated fats, which are the worst foods for fatty liver. Having a liver detox shake for weight loss is a great way to provide the liver with essential nutrients for energy production and will yield optimal results in a fasting state or first thing in the morning.

A liver detox shake for fat loss provides the liver with the nutrients required for detox yet minimal calories. Metabolic Maintenance Detox Complete nutrients help the body utilize stored glycogen and fat for energy. It also contains milk thistle, which protects the liver from environmental toxins and oxidative stress.

The liver is also responsible for detoxifying toxins in fat cells. The body will often only burn fat once the liver can safely detoxify the toxins stored in fat cells. And the liver’s detoxification pathways need nutrients to detox toxins.

The key to doing a liver detox for weight loss is to have a low caloric intake while also supporting the liver with nutrients needed to detox. Lowering the intake of calories will also allow the liver to tap into stored fat for energy.

When too much food and calories are consumed, the liver is always in storage mode. When the liver is in storage mode, it does not have the opportunity or time to detoxify and use stored fat as fuel.

Nutrients such as B vitamins, magnesium, and Coenzyme Q10 are required to use stored glucose for energy. L carnitine is a nutrient needed to transport fat for energy production. All these nutrients help to produce energy in the body from stored fat and glycogen.

Most people are too busy filling their bodies with junk food and not giving the liver enough nutrition and time to tap into fat for energy.

It is difficult to clean your house if you keep bringing in more clutter and garbage. The same is true in our bodies. It is challenging for the liver to detox and burn stored fat for energy when it is busy storing food.

Too much food consumption, especially refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and fats, will burden the liver and hinder weight loss. Taking a liver detox shake for weight loss is a great way to reduce your caloric intake while providing your liver and body with the nutrients it needs so you have optimal energy levels while detoxing.

You can use Metabolic Maintenance Detox Complete as a shake to replace one of your main meals. A detox shake will take the load off your digestive system and free up energy for your liver to focus on detoxification.

Best dietary supplements for liver detox and weight loss

#1 Detox Shake

Allowing the liver to use its stored fat by fasting is one of the quickest ways to lose weight and reverse fatty liver. However, many people can struggle with fasting.

A detox shake helps to curb hunger while providing the liver with nutrients to detox for weight loss. Enjoying a low-calorie shake full of micro-nutrients and amino acids is an easy way to jump-start weight loss.

Mix a scoop of Metabolic detox powder into a cup of nut milk with ice cubes, and you’re done! It is that simple to make a liver detox shake for weight loss.

Replacing your morning meal with a detox shake allows the liver to focus on detoxification. Consuming minimal calories also allows the liver to burn through excess glycogen and fat stores in the liver.

#2 phosphatidylcholine

Phosphatidylcholine is a crucial nutrient for fatty liver detox as it is needed to transport fats out of the liver. If fats build up in the liver due to fats not being transported out, fatty liver can develop.

Phosphatidylcholine also promotes bile flow from a sluggish gallbladder. Good bile flow is crucial for liver detox and weight loss.

Your liver detoxes through a 3-step process, and good liver function requires your phase 3 liver detox to function optimally. Phase 3 liver detox is where your liver dumps toxic compounds ready for elimination into the bile. Phosphatidylcholine is an essential nutrient involved in phase 3 liver detoxification.

It is one of the best supplements for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease that no one is talking about. I cannot stress enough how vital choline is for fatty liver, detox, and weight loss.

Think of phase 3 liver detoxification as the last doorway involved in liver detox. That detox door via bile flow from the gallbladder needs to be wide open.

#3 Fish Oil

Fish oil is another great nutrient for weight loss as it has been shown to prevent fatty liver. Fish, flax seeds, and chia seeds are fantastic sources of anti-inflammatory omega-three fats.

Omega 3 fats must be balanced with omega 6 fats, so I always recommend taking fish oil when taking sunflower lecithin, which contains phosphatidylcholine, to keep these fats in balance.

#4 Berberine

Berberine is one of my top supplement recommendations for liver detox, weight loss, and fatty liver. (not to mention it is great for IBS and SIBO as well). A meta-analysis of 12 studies found that berberine significantly reduced body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and inflammation.

Another study found that berberine was also protective against fatty liver. As discussed earlier in this post fatty liver is an underlying cause of weight gain; thus berberine’s ability to prevent fatty liver and improve lipid metabolism in the liver is another reason why berberine is excellent for weight loss.

Insulin resistance and inflammation are additional underlying causes of weight gain, and berberine and been shown to improve insulin resistance and boost antioxidant production to protect the liver from oxidative stress.

Diet tips for liver detox and weight loss

The first step to implementing a liver cleanse diet for weight loss is to eliminate all the processed foods from your kitchen cupboards and instead stock up on whole foods, including lots of fruits and vegetables. Avoid eating out, especially fast foods and fried foods, as these unhealthy foods are high in calories and the worst foods for liver health.

It is also important to avoid all your food sensitivities when doing a liver cleanse for weight loss, as these foods will trigger your immune system and cause inflammation that can hinder your weight loss goals.

Low-calorie plant-based fruits and vegetables are the best foods for weight loss and reversing insulin resistance. Eating liver cleansing fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants is best to combat free radicals that cause inflammation and liver damage.

Include all the colors of the rainbow, including cruciferous vegetables, leafy greens, and beets as they are among the top vegetables to eat when doing a liver cleanse for weight loss. Vegetables are low in calories yet high in micronutrients to support liver health.

Blueberries are one of the highest antioxidant fruits that can reduce fatty liver and prevent insulin resistance. Eating blueberries is essential on a liver cleanse diet for weight loss!

Fats are the most calorie-dense foods on the planet and overwhelm a fatty liver. Go easy on fats when doing a liver detox for weight loss.

In Medical Mediums’ book Liver Rescue, he recommends avoiding the intake of fats in the morning to help cleanse the liver. Instead, you can enjoy various fruits, celery juice, fresh vegetable juice, and hibiscus tea, which are all phenomenal for liver detox and weight loss.

Drinking dandelion tea instead of coffee is a fantastic alternative that also helps to promote bile production and flow, which will help detox the liver and help with your weight loss efforts.

Enjoy a soup, salad, or Buddha bowl for lunch with an oil-free dressing. Salad dressings can ruin the weight loss benefits of salads as most commercial dressings contain rancid oils that are high in calories yet nutrient deficient and will hinder your weight loss results. Instead, make homemade oil-free salad dressings when you are on a liver cleanse diet for weight loss.

This vegan cashew caesar is one of my favorites! I also love a Mexican quinoa salad served with an oil-free avocado dressing with lime, cilantro, salt, pepper, coconut sugar, and water. Mmm, so good! Nuts and avocados are full of unprocessed, healthy fats and are great for making oil-free salad dressings.

Enjoy a healthy dinner, such as salmon with lemon juice, rice, and salad with lots of leafy greens for dinner.

When on a liver detox diet, it is imperative to drink plenty of water to flush toxic substances out of the body. You can also enjoy a simple detox drink by squeezing fresh lemon juice in warm water and drinking it first thing in the morning.

Drinking a liver detox shake in the morning, fasting, eating nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables, foods high in choline and omega-three fats are the best way to reverse fatty liver for weight loss. Also be sure to check out these must know healthy liver diet tips.

Really am enjoying your website. I have struggled with the “mystery” of insulin resistance for years. Your site is like waling into the light…Thank you! I live in Austin, Tx. Can you recommend a Dr. to help with diabetes, fatty liver and insulin resistance?

I am so glad you have found the articles helpful. And sorry no I don’t know of a doctor in Austin that specializes in fatty liver and insulin resistance although I do highly recommend reading the books Mastering Diabetes by Robby and Cyrus. They also have a great program for diabetes. The metabolism Reset Diet is really good as well. Hope that helps.

    Hi!
I am loving your content! However, when I click on some of your links above (7 Healthy Salads) it brings me to a site, RankIQ, that costs $50 to sign up with. Is this correct?

Hi Sue, I’m glad your loving the content and thanks for pointing that out. No it should not link to rank IQ ( it is an app I use when updating my posts and for some reason it changes some of the links). I have fixed that link now so it will take you to the correct page with the healthy salad recipes :)
