June 29, 2023 by Amber

blueberry beet smoothie this post

This blueberry beet smoothie is fantastic for those looking to nourish their bodies, support liver health, promote gallbladder function, and aid in weight loss. It also contains cold hibiscus tea, which is rich in phytonutrients that are beneficial for fatty liver and weight loss.

A great way to energize and start your day is by making this beet and blueberry smoothie that instantly feels cleansing and is a nutritional powerhouse. Fresh beets and blueberries combine well to make the most beautiful and healthy purple-colored smoothie.

I specifically formulated this beet blueberry smoothie for my liver detox protocol, as the combination of beets, blueberries, and hibiscus tea are phenomenal for optimal liver health. They are among my top liver-cleansing foods, so I had to make a smoothie with all three ingredients as a powerful nutritious blend to support the liver and aid in phase 3 liver detoxification.

As part of my liver detox protocol for weight loss, I would only eat fresh fruits or have a morning smoothie low in saturated fats. (Hemp seeds and flax seeds are rich in polyunsaturated omega 3 and 6 fats which are beneficial for the liver, which is why I allowed small amounts in this delicious smoothie!)

Combining blueberries and bananas with beets yields a subtle earthy flavor with the perfect subtle sweetness. If you are a beet lover, you will love this beet berry smoothie, and if you aren’t a beet lover, you should be, as they are excellent for diabetics, a sluggish gallbladder, and phase 3 liver detox.

Blueberry Beet Smoothie Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups frozen blueberries
  • 1/4 cup raw grated beets
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 tsp ground flax seeds
  • 2 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 2 scoops of Organika collagen powder (optional)
  • 1 cup cold hibiscus tea

How to make the beet and blueberry smoothie:

Step 1: Prepare the hibiscus tea:

  • Steep one hibiscus tea bag in a cup of hot water. wait until the hibiscus tea is cold before using.

Step 2: Prepare the Beets

  • Start by peeling and grating the beets until you have 1/4 cup of grated beets. Using raw beets preserves their natural enzymes and nutrients, maximizing their health benefits.

Step 3: Add ingredients to the blender

  • In a blender, combine the frozen blueberries, raw grated beets, banana, ground flax seeds, hemp seeds, and collagen powder (if using).
  • Add the cold hibiscus tea to facilitate blending and enhance the refreshing qualities of the smoothie.

Step 4: Blend until Smooth

  • Secure the blender lid and blend all the ingredients on high speed until you achieve a creamy texture and smooth consistency. Pause to scrape down the sides, if necessary.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy!

  • Pour the liver cleansing blueberry beet smoothie into a glass and enjoy this smoothie with healthy vegetables, fruits, and omega-3 fats with anti-inflammatory properties that reduce oxidative damage in the body.

Blueberry beet smoothie to cleanse the liver

Blueberry beet smoothie benefits

  1. Fatty Liver Support: Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins with anti-inflammatory properties that help protect the liver from oxidative stress. Blueberries have also been shown to prevent fatty liver and are excellent for weight loss. Hibiscus tea is also fantastic for liver health, so I included it in this smoothie!
  2. Improve Gallbladder Function: Beets are my favorite vegetables to promote bile flow to assist in the breakdown and digestion of fats. Promoting antimicrobial bile flow helps prevent SIBO and IBS. Not to mention beet’s ability to encourage bile flow from a sluggish gallbladder is crucial for phase 3 liver detox. Opening up phase 3 liver detox should be the first step in and liver detoxification program!
  3. Weight Loss Aid: This smoothie is low in calories, high in fiber, and packed with nutrients, making it a filling and nutritious option for weight loss.
  4. Boost Stamina: Not every smoothie is full of as many phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals as this beet blueberry smoothie contains decent amounts of B vitamins and magnesium essential for energy production. Plus, it is an excellent source of additional nutrients, including vitamin C, K, copper, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc.
  5. Macronutrient profile: According to Cronometer (my favorite app for calculating the nutritional profile of foods and recipes), this smoothie contains 478 calories, 20 grams of protein, 63 grams of carbohydrates, and 14 grams of healthy fats.

Tips and substitutions

This smoothie has a thinner consistency, so if you prefer a thicker smoothie, use 1/2 to 3/4 cups of hibiscus tea.

The smoothie has no added sugar, as the beets, banana, and blueberries provided enough sweetness for my taste buds. Make a naturally sweeter smoothie by adding a couple of dates to the blender and blend in with all the smoothie ingredients.

If you love beets, go ahead and add more to the smoothie. I didn’t want to overwhelm the smoothie with too much beet flavor, so I only used a quarter cup.

While I highly recommend making the beet blueberry smoothie with cold hibiscus tea, this can also be substituted for a cup of water instead or unsweetened almond milk.

I added a scoop of collagen powder for additional protein, but this is optional. Without the collagen powder, this smoothie still has 10 grams of protein, according to Cronometer 🙂

By making this blueberry beet smoothie, you are harnessing the power of hibiscus tea, raw grated beets, and blueberries to support liver health, promote gallbladder function, and aid in weight loss. With its vibrant flavors and nourishing properties, this smoothie is one of my new favorite smoothie recipes for fatty liver and weight loss.
