So many people struggle with symptoms of a sluggish gallbladder and trouble digesting fats. I love creating delicious and healthy recipes that contain beets. This beet raspberry smoothie is just one of many recipes that help support a sluggish gallbladder for weight loss and liver detox.
Eating beets is my number one dietary recommendation to promote liver detox and cleanse the gallbladder. Adding small amounts of healthy fats such as hemp seeds and coconut milk is good for the gallbladder as dietary fats signal the release of bile from the gallbladder for fat digestion.
Combining fats from coconut milk and hemp seeds with beetroot in this gallbladder detox smoothie promotes bile flow and liver detox.
What foods upset the gallbladder?
People with gallbladder problems often find that high-fat foods such as coconut milk can upset the gallbladder, especially when the bile is thick and congested. The fats in coconut milk can aggravate the gallbladder as the fats stimulate bile release, which can be uncomfortable when the bile is vicious. It is best to eat small amounts of fat in this scenario and optimize bile production and flow by supporting a sluggish gallbladder.
This raw beet smoothie has a mild earthy flavor from the beets. However, it is not too noticeable as the beets are combined with raspberries, bananas, and coconut milk, resulting in this beautiful pink beetroot smoothie for the gallbladder.
Ingredients for the Gallbladder Detox Smoothie
1 cup frozen raspberries
1/2 banana
1/4 cup coconut milk
2 tbsp hemp seeds
1/4 cup diced or grated beets
1/2 cup almond milk or nut milk of your choice
To make the raw beet smoothie, place all ingredients into a blender and blend until nice and smooth.
Benefits of this beet smoothie for the gallbladder and weight loss
Beets are great for liver and detoxification support as beets are one of the best foods to stimulate bile flow so that toxins dumped into the bile from the liver can be escorted out of the body via the bile.
Before implementing a liver detoxification protocol, the bile must be flowing out of the gallbladder. Optimal bile flow is known as your phase 3 liver detox pathway. Bile must not be congested, thick, or vicious; otherwise, the toxins will build up and not leave the body and instead further burden the body.
The beet smoothie for the gallbladder is fantastic for weight loss due to beets improving bile flow and thus eliminating waste and toxins from the liver. Often the body will not burn fuel from fat cells if the fat cell is full of toxins. Therefore a healthy liver and gallbladder are essential for weight loss.
Optimizing bile production and flow to help digest fats requires the amino acids taurine and glycine for the liver to make bile. These two nutrients are found in gallbladder nutrients and are essential for a healthy gallbladder.
Phosphatidylcholine helps with the transport and flow of bile out of the gallbladder, which is in Seeking Health’s Optimal PC. This nutrient is crucial for weight loss and preventing a fatty liver.
Low bile production symptoms or signs that your liver and gallbladder may be struggling and in need of some extra love include:
- nausea
- pain or heaviness under the right rib cage
- floating stools
- upset stomach from fatty foods or craving fatty foods
- motion sickness
- skin problems such as acne
- body odor
- deficiency in the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

What do you suggest for those of us that have no gallbladder for detoxing. How is bile affected by not having a gallbladder?
It is still beneficial to promote bile production and flow in the liver. The gallbladder stores bile, but it is produced in the liver, and the bile duct in the liver can also be sluggish. The gallbladder stores bile and releases it in larger amounts when fats are eaten, but people without a gallbladder may need to take ox bile with high-fat meals to help with the emulsification of fats as they do not have larger amounts of bile stored up. Hope this helps, everyone is still different and tolerates supplements and bile flow support differently so it is hard to be super specific 🙂
Your article talks about this helping with weight loss and impaired glucose tolerance, but removing most of the fiber by juicing, and then drinking fruits and vegetables high in fructose will likely spike sugar, won’t it?
Hi Liz,
Which post are you referring to? As this post is a smoothie recipe ?
