How to Improve Gallbladder Function for Liver Detox

December 16, 2018 by Amber

this post

These 6 effective tips to improve gallbladder function are also crucial for liver detox. The liver is often known as the body’s primary detoxification organ but learning how to improve gallbladder function is essential to ensure that the toxins get out of the liver.

Excretion of waste products from the liver via the bile is crucial for daily detoxification. Improving gallbladder function by supporting bile production and flow is one of the best ways to cleanse the gallbladder and liver.

Healthy gallbladder function and optimal bile flow is required for phase three liver detoxification. When it comes to detoxing the body the right way always start with opening up the phase 3 detox door. Think of phase three detoxification as the elimination of toxins out of the liver via the bile.

Why it is essential to improve gallbladder function

One of the primary functions of the gallbladder is to store and concentrate bile for the digestion of fats and elimination of toxins.

Toxins from the liver are dumped into the bile, then escorted out of the body via the bowels. Bile also helps to stimulate peristalsis of the digestive tract. Peristalsis helps to ensure that the toxins from the liver are eliminated via bowel movements.

Once the liver has metabolized toxins, the body gets rid of them through various ways such as the skin, breath, sweat, urine, bile, and bowels.

The bile is a primary route for the elimination of toxins. The gallbladder is responsible for storing and releasing bile, which is why improving gallbladder function is crucial for liver detox.

Bile can also become thick and sludgy resulting in poor bile flow. Improving both bile production and flow is essential for a healthy liver and gallbladder. A sluggish gallbladder that does not release bile with toxins can result in other elimination routes becoming clogged.

As the body tries to eliminate toxins via other routes of elimination such as the skin, breath, and sweat, symptoms such as acne, bad breath, and body odor can occur.

If someone has a sluggish gallbladder that is not functioning optimally or the bile is thick and sludgy, it is like cleaning your house but leaving all the rubbish in a corner, which then continues to stink up the house and breed bacteria.

The same is true in our bodies. If you have a sluggish gallbladder and low bile flow, toxins that are ready for elimination can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream, which then further burdens the liver.

Low bile production symptoms

Some common symptoms of low bile production and low bile flow include:

  • floating stools
  • greasy stools
  • light or clay-colored stools
  • nausea
  • pain in the right shoulder blade
  • sluggish bowel movements
  • diarrhea due to fat malabsorption

Learning how to improve bile production and how to thin bile to ensure good bile flow from the gallbladder is crucial for liver detox. Before implementing a liver detoxification protocol, be sure to have optimal gallbladder function and bile flow so that toxins can get out of the liver via the bile.

One of the best ways to promote regular bowel movements is by supporting bile flow from the gallbladder. Bile helps to stimulate peristalsis, thus promoting healthy bowel movements for detoxification.

How to improve gallbladder function

Below are my favorite liver detox supplements to help cleanse the gallbladder, thin the bile, and improve bile flow from a sluggish gallbladder.

How to thin bile sludge

1. Phosphatidylcholine (optimal PC) helps to keep bile flowing freely from the gallbladder for liver detox.

There needs to be an ample supply of phosphatidylcholine in the bile to prevent bile from becoming too thick and sludgy. Supplementing with phosphatidylcholine is one of the best ways to thin bile naturally.

Individuals with the PEMT gene mutation or a choline deficiency are likely to have a sluggish gallbladder with sludgy bile due to decreased phosphatidylcholine levels.

Phosphatidylcholine also helps with emulsification and digestion of fats while also preventing fatty liver.

2. Milk thistle is an amazing herb found in seeking healthy’s liver nutrients that helps to cleanse the liver along with improving gallbladder function and bile flow

3. Turmeric is a culinary herb that helps to stimulate bile secretion from the gallbladder. Spice up your smoothies, and stir-fries with this wonderful spice to increase bile flow. Mango is one of my favourite fruits to combine with turmeric such as this mango turmeric smoothie.

4. Dandelion root is a bitter herb that promotes bile flow and is used for a sluggish liver and gallbladder. Drinking dandelion root tea is a fantastic gallbladder cleanse tea to support bile flow from the gallbladder for liver detox. A great way to get dandelion root into your daily diet is by substituting your morning tea or coffee with dandelion tea.

Enjoy dandelion tea black or however you enjoy your coffee. Dandelion tea is a fantastic replacement for coffee. I like to spice mine with a touch of cinnamon, milk and coconut sugar. Sometimes I do half coffee and half dandelion tea mixed together as I love my morning coffee but like to increase bile flow with dandelion tea!

5. Beets are one of the best foods to improve gallbladder function and thin bile. This liver cleansing vegetable gets thick and vicious bile flowing from the gallbladder and among the top foods to include in a sluggish gallbladder diet.

Beet kvass with lemon and ginger is also great for liver support. These oven roasted beets and apple beet salad is amazing for improving liver and gallbladder function.

6. Artichokes are another fantastic liver cleansing food to support gallbladder function and bile flow. A study on artichoke combined with milk thistle and green tea was effective in reducing biliary sludge and improving gallbladder function.

Studies also show artichoke supplementation may reduce liver enzymes (ALT, AST), suggesting liver protective benefits. Artichoke’s antioxidant properties contribute to its protective role in liver health.

How to improve liver and gallbladder function

The best way to improve liver and gallbladder function is to support both bile production and flow. Bile formation without bile flow is only half of the equation. Likewise, bile flow without bile formation is generally not useful. Those with compromised bile function are often struggling with both bile production and flow.

If your gallbladder feels sluggish or you struggle with fat digestion, targeted nutrients can make a noticeable difference in how you feel after meals. The best way to ensure both bile production and flow is to support the gallbladder with nutrients required for both bile production and flow.

Bile Nutrients is a unique blend of herbs and nutrients intended to support both the formation and the flow of bile.

By implementing these tips and supplements to improve gallbladder function, you will also improve liver detox, digestion, and help to prevent SIBO by supporting antimicrobial bile flow!

The liver and gallbladder work and tandem, and the health of both are essential for a healthy body and gut health. Learn additional ways to boost your liver health with these must know healthy liver diet tips!

If you are dealing with symptoms like bloating after eating, sluggish digestion, or discomfort after fatty meals, your gallbladder or another digestive organ may need support.

This post focuses on how to support gallbladder function, but if you are not sure where your symptoms are coming from, I put together a quick symptom guide to help you identify which digestive organ needs the most support.

You can still support the production and flow of bile within the liver with these tips too :) You just do not have the capacity to store biel thus you may also benefit from taking external ox bile with with high fat meals.

Another thing to do is drink plenty of water. My Mom had a liver drain when she had cancer, and we learned a lot about the bile. A healthy person should have a liter of bile every day, so that’s quite a bit of liquid, not counting all the other waste fluids.
