Biogaia protectis is the best baby probiotic that worked wonders to reduce colic, crying, gas, and improved sleep in my newborn. It is super easy to give the biogaia baby drops to your breastfed baby as you can drop the liquid probiotic on your nipple prior to breastfeeding.
As a new mom, I was blessed with a beautiful, happy and healthy baby girl with a fantastic temperament. I could quickly settle her through breastfeeding with no problem.

While the newborn phase can feel overwhelming, I was lucky to have an easy-going, chill baby who easily breastfed and latched with no problem. I was tired, but at least I would breastfeed and talk on the phone for hours with no problem while with my newborn.
Then three weeks hit, and things started to get more challenging. In the evening, I began to notice that my baby girl was frantically feeding, then tearing off the boob and crying to latch back on again. After this cycle repeated for some time, I thought, well, maybe she is upset because she has a dirty diaper.
When I placed her on her back to change her diaper, she projectile vomited for the first time. The next night the same thing happened. She was fussing on the boob, and when I lay her down on her back to change her diaper, she vomited up the milk again; this time, I clued in. Next time she frantically feeds, I need to burp her, I reminded myself.
During the day, she would breastfeed well, and then like clockwork come 5:00; she would be crying as she tore on and off the boob. Once I put her in an upright position over my shoulder to burp her, she would settle and become happy again.
Still, breastfeeding in the evening and during the night was becoming increasingly challenging. During the evening, she only wanted to be held and rocked in an upright position.
I desperately wanted answers as to why my baby girl was all of a sudden fussy in the evening non-stop, not breastfeeding well, hated lying on her back, and had gas. Spending the evening walking her back and forth through our apartment for three hours was becoming exhausting. Every day I started to dread what I thought was the 5:00 witching hour.
One night I remember holding my baby girl upright as I rocked her to sleep, feeling so bad for her as I was sure she must have some stomach pain that was causing her to cry.
I had researched the baby probiotic biogaia protects and read many positive reviews of other moms who noticed improvements with the biogaia protectis drops for colic, gas, and silent reflux.
As I rocked my crying baby to sleep, I hoped that the biogaia protectis drops would be just as effective for my baby girl.
Intuitively, I knew that something was up with her stomach as she had a hard, bloated belly and would cry whenever I tried to put her on her back. I promised her that I knew she had a sore tummy and I would order her a probiotic to help her feel better.
Benefits of BioGaia Protectis Probiotic for Babies
Biogaia protectis contains a specific probiotic strain called l reuteri, a probiotic that I had used in the past on myself and with SIBO clients. L. rueteri differs from other baby probiotics as l reuteri likes to inhabit the stomach and small intestine.
L reuteri inhibits the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and probiotic bacteria that are not meant to inhabit the small intestine. Since my 3-4 week baby girl had a bloated tummy and was burping and vomiting after feeding, I figured this is an upper digestive system.
Most probiotics are meant to inhabit the colon, but l reuteri occupies the upper digestive system and provides many beneficial functions including inhibiting SIBO.
The biogaia protectis baby probiotic has been tested on infants one month of age with positive outcomes, so I felt comfortable giving this specific probiotic to my newborn baby.
Within one week of administering 3-4 biogaia protectis drops, I noticed that my baby girl was no longer fussing as much in the evening, was able to sleep better, and lie on her back. She was also back to breastfeeding normally again, where she was calm and no longer tearing on and off the boob while crying.
This felt like a miracle for us and our baby, who was back to her usual happy self. At six weeks, she has started to sleep from 7 at night to 1 am. She even self settles herself to sleep sometimes with no crying if she wakes after lying down in her bed.
After taking the BioGaia Protectis baby drops, these improvements were huge. A couple of weeks prior, she was constantly crying and needing to be walked for 3 hrs before bed in an upright position.
I tell you, a happy baby makes for happy parents. A fussy colicky baby can quickly cause parents to become irritable and exhausted. A crying baby is trying to communicate that something is wrong, and it is up to us parents to try to understand and dissect what a crying baby wants or needs.
It is no easy feat, but I am glad that I came across the BioGaia Protectis baby probiotic for colic that worked wonders for our little angel to improve her sleep and reduce her bloated tummy. She was also able to breastfeed comfortably and sleep on her back.
How to give BioGaia Protectis baby drops to newborns.
It was super easy to give the BioGaia Protectis baby drops to my newborn. The baby probiotic is in liquid form so I would pump fresh breast milk into a clean bottle and then add the probiotic drops. The recommended dose is five drops daily. I initially started with 3 drops to make sure she tolerated it well, then increased to 5, then dropped back down to 3 drops daily as that dose felt best and I was seeing improvements.
How to give biogaia to a breastfed baby
If you only breastfeed your baby, you can place a drop of the biogaia protectis baby probiotic on your nipple and then breastfeed your baby right away. It is so handy being able to adjust the dosage and place the liquid probiotic on your nipple for breastfed babies as you don’t have to worry about mixing up a formula, pumping breastmilk, or trying to give your baby a bottle.
I actually stopped giving my baby a bottle with the probiotic once I discovered I could just drop it on my nipple. So much easier and no mess!
BioGaia Protectis is one of the best probiotics for a colic baby. In this study, 5 drops of the BioGaia Protectis baby drops administered daily significantly reduced crying time in babies with colic by 21 days and less.
