Why the Viome Gut Test is the Best Gut Microbiome Test

The viome gut test is the best microbiome test I have come across that you can do in the comfort of your own home. One of the reasons why I love the at-home viome stool test is that you don’t need a practitioner to order the test for you, and it comes with both food recommendations and supplement recommendations.

The food and supplement recommendations that come with your viome test after your stool sample has been analyzed are worth every penny. You do not need a practitioner to interpret your results unless you want to dive deep, as the food and supplement recommendations are tailored to address your unique microbiome scores. The recommendations are linked to studies citing the benefits and tell you what gut score a specific food or supplement recommendation will improve.

If you want to dive deep into your viome test results, it is beneficial to have a gut health practitioner interpret your results as there is so much additional information and insights into the connection between your gut health and the microbiome.

You will also receive a metabolic fitness score associated with insulin resistance and weight control. A poor metabolic fitness score can predispose someone to insulin resistance and weight gain. If you are struggling to lose weight, there is likely a gut microbiome connection that needs to be addressed.

Why I chose to get the viome gut test

I chose to do the viome gut test after I had IV antibiotics plus a two-week round of amoxicillin antibiotics due to having minor surgery after my labor. Previous to this round of antibiotics, I had only taken them once.

After this round of antibiotics, I started to get bloated after eating foods and noticed abnormal stinky gas, which were new digestive symptoms for me. I knew the antibiotics would have decimated my microbiome and killed many beneficial bacteria. I wanted to find out what specific foods and probiotics would help to reinoculate and balance my microbiome.

While digestive enzymes are super helpful in reducing bloating, a healthy, diverse microbiome is also crucial to reduce and prevent bloating as beneficial bacteria in the gut produce enzymes to break down food. Bloating can be caused by the loss of bacteria that make enzymes to break down specific foods.

My viome gut intelligence test results revealed that my microbial diversity was low due to taking antibiotics. I wish I knew what my microbial diversity was before taking antibiotics, but I am sure taking antibiotics significantly reduced my microbial diversity. A diverse microbiome is essential for optimal gut health and to prevent bloating.

After doing the viome gut test, I also learned that my sulfide gas production pathway was not optimal, meaning I had too much hydrogen sulfide gas produced by gut bacteria.

Foods high in sulfur compounds such as broccoli feed bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide gas which is stinky and allows the hydrogen sulfide-producing bacteria to flourish. For this reason, broccoli was on my avoid food list even though broccoli is one of the best liver cleansing superfoods.

Too much hydrogen sulfide gas production causes stinky gas and can also cause bad breath. It can also cause joint pain, which I have been prone to in one finger.

Knowing this information clarified why I noticed odorous gas after eating foods high in sulfur, such as eggs, broccoli, cauliflower, onion, and garlic. Reducing these foods for some time was crucial to help rebalance my microbiome.

After taking antibiotics, a lot of beneficial bacteria are killed and is an opportunity for opportunistic bacteria and organisms to take over, such as candida or, in my case, bacteria that produced hydrogen sulfide gas were thriving.

The food recommendations from my viome gut test results were super helpful to rebalance my microbiome. A year later, I can say that the bloating and stinky are significantly reduced. I am so glad I chose to do the viome stool test, as implementing the recommendations was key to getting my gut health back on track after taking antibiotics.

Many gut health tests will tell you what type of bacteria are in your gut or will measure different gut health scores, but they don’t tell you what food and supplements will help to rebalance and heal your gut. The food and supplement recommendations are life-changing for your gut health.

What to expect from your viome test results

After you have done the viome stool test at home and sent it back to the lab, you will receive your viome test results online, where you can log in and see all your recommendations and gut health scores.

In viome’s food recommendations they have four categories:

  • Superfoods for your gut health
  • Foods to enjoy
  • Foods to minimize
  • Foods to avoid

The viome test also provides supplement recommendations to improve your gut health that can be ordered from viome if you choose. The recommendations also tell you what gut health score the specific supplement will help to improve.

L Rhamnosus was one of my probiotic recommendations to improve my active microbial diversity and inflammatory activity scores. L Rhamnosus is also one of the best probiotics for SIBO and candida!

Pomegranate fruit was a superfood for me. Pomegranate extract was one of my supplement recommendations to improve my cellular stress, immune system activation, flagellar assembly pathways, gut lining, and inflammatory activity scores.

Apple cider vinegar was a superfood for me which also happened to be the magic ingredient that helped me to lower my fasting blood sugar when I had minor gestational diabetes. The body is interconnected in so many ways, and one superfood that is good for gut health can also help to lower your blood sugar, such as apple cider vinegar.

These were just a couple of my recommendations out of many.

You will also receive a total gut health score out of 100. Mine was not optimal, so I had some work to do, but at least I had specific recommendations to improve my unique microbiome. I don’t mind finding out that I have a problem if I am given a solution to get better!
