3 of The Best Probiotics for Candida Overgrowth and Leaky Gut

August 31, 2020 by Amber

Using specific probiotics for candida overgrowth is crucial for restoring beneficial flora in the gut. Specific probiotic strains have been shown to inhibit candida overgrowth.

L. Reuteri, L. Rhamnosus GG, and Saccharomyces Boulardii are some of the best probiotics for yeast overgrowth. Getting rid of candida requires a multiprong approach that includes dietary changes, antifungals, and specific probiotics for candida.

Candida is an opportunistic yeast that overgrows when the conditions are right. A diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar will feed candida overgrowth. If there is a lack of beneficial probiotics in the gut, then candida is allowed to overgrow.

How are probiotics good for candida?

Probiotics help to keep candida levels in check by taking up space in the gut. When the gut microbiome is full of beneficial probiotics, there is no room for candida to overgrow. A probiotic supplement that contains good bacteria to combat yeast in the body is an effective way to reduce levels.

Candida overgrowth often occurs after the use of antibiotics, where beneficial bacteria die along with pathogenic bacteria. Antibiotic use is the perfect opportunity for candida to take over.

A course of antibiotics that causes a loss of beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract allows for candida to overgrow where the beneficial probiotic bacteria once resided.

Candida is an opportunistic yeast that will overgrow when the conditions are right. An overgrowth of candida, especially in its virulent forms, will cause a leaky gut. Probiotics can help heal leaky gut by producing short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, which promote the integrity and functioning of the gut lining.

Using the best probiotics for candida and leaky gut help to reinoculate the gut with specific strains that inhibit candida overgrowth and prevent leaky gut.

Taking the right probiotic strains helps to reduce candida overgrowth via several mechanisms such as inhibiting the growth of candida, preventing candida from colonizing in the gastrointestinal tract, and producing anti-fungal substances to inhibit and reduce candida overgrowth.

As you kill candida with antimicrobials or antifungal medication, you also want to ensure that you replace the gut with beneficial bacteria to take over where candida once resided. When candida and bad bacteria die, they release toxic endotoxins that can cause die-off relations.

Whenever die-off reactions occur from taking probiotics for candida or antimicrobials for candida infections, it is essential to take a binder such as activated charcoal. Taking activated charcoal helps to bind the endotoxins released by the overgrowth of yeast.

Which probiotics are best for candida?

Not all probiotics are equal when it comes to inhibiting candida overgrowth. Saccharomyces Boulardii, L. Reuteri, and L. Rhamnosus are some of the best probiotic strains for candida that are effective.

Saccharomyces Boulardii for candida and vaginal health

Saccharomyces Boulardii is a beneficial yeast that competes with candida to prevent candida overgrowth. This specific beneficial yeast reduced inflammation and candida levels in mice. S. boulardii produces caprylic acid, which is antifungal and reduces candida overgrowth.

Candida albicans is one of the major causes of vaginal yeast infections. Vaginal administration of saccharomyces cerevisiae inhibited the adherence of candida to epithelial cells and was able to help clear the vaginal fungal infection.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae also suppresses the ability of candida to switch into its more virulent mycelium form.

lactobacillus Rhamnosus: Best probiotic for candida and leaky gut

Lactobacillus Rhamnosus is another probiotic strain that interferes with candida overgrowth, morphogenesis, and adhesion. L. Rhamnosus was able to inhibit the hyphal formation of candida Albicans.

The virulent hyphal formation of candida allows candida to penetrate the epithelial lining. The breakdown and penetration of candida into the intestinal wall of the gut leads to a leaky gut.

A leaky gut leads to various symptoms, which is why reducing candida overgrowth is crucial for optimal gut health. L. Rhamnosus GG inhibits the growth of candida and adhesion of candida to the epithelial lining; for this reason, it is one of the best probiotics for candida and leaky gut.

Under normal circumstances, candida is non-pathogenic. Candida becomes pathogenic when there is a candida fungal overgrowth followed by adhesion, tissue invasion, and thus mucosal infection.

Probiotic strains such as L. Rhamnosus help to prevent candida overgrowth by inhibiting candida growth, hyphal morphogenesis, and adhesion to the epithelial lining.

The benefits of L. Reuteri for candida

L. Reuteri is another probiotic for candida overgrowth that inhibited the growth of 5 common candida species.

The inhibition of candida by L. Reuteri is likely caused by the acidic environment created from lactic acid and organic acids produced by L. Reuteri.

The candida fungus stays in the less virulent yeast form when the pH is low. A neutral to alkaline pH is optimal for candida to switch into the pathogenic hyphal form.

L. Reuteri actually produces an antimicrobial substance called reuterin and bacteriocins. These compounds may prevent the DNA synthesis of pathogens in the surrounding area.

Taking specific probiotic strains such as Saccharomyces Boulardii, L. Rhamnosus, and L. Reuteri are fantastic probiotics for candida overgrowth.

By optimizing the microbial terrain with a healthy balance of beneficial probiotics, candida growth can be kept in check. These probiotics have many health benefits, as they inhibit candida overgrowth in the gut.

If candida penetrates the gut lining, it can cause systemic candida infections that affect the deeper organs causing various health issues. One of the best things you can do to maintain a healthy gut flora is to take these probiotic strains that have been proven effective for candida.

You can rotate through the different strains one at a time to inoculate the gut with these beneficial probiotics. The best time to take probiotics is on an empty stomach in the morning before eating or in the evening before bed.

Candida is a huge problem, especially when candida levels become too high. Overcoming candida takes a multifaceted approach that involves probiotics, dietary changes, and antifungals or antimicrobials. This is my story of how I healed candida overgrowth.

You are doing amazing work! Thanks for sharing your wonderful post❤️. I recently had to be prescribed antibiotics for a sinus infection, so I already knew I would get a yeast infection because I always do whenever I have to take antibiotics. Diflucan gives me a lot of relief (so happy 😊 I googled ‘Nocnd247’ and got it). What many people may not know is that antibiotics can cause other medical issues to develop while taking them, such as diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, excessive gas, yeast infections, etc. Taking antibiotics this time resulted in me having a vaginal and anal yeast infection. I hate itching worse than being in pain!

Thank you! I am glad you found the information helpful. Yes antibiotics are sometimes necessary but often cause side effects such as yeast overgrowth.

Hi Janine, I am not aware of a brand that specifically has all of those 3 probiotics in one but if you search you may be able to find one. You could also start with one strain of the probiotics for candida then purchase another strain after as diversity is key! If you find them all in one I would love to know 🙂

I’ve been dealing with Candida for 3 years. Does anyone know of a brand of Probiotics that contains all of the strains mentioned in the above article? I’m desperate and can’t afford to buy 3 separate bottles of Probiotics every month. Would appreciate any comments of information. Many thanks.

I do not know of a brand that has all 3 of these in one although if you find one I would love to know. You can always start with one strain at a time 🙂

I stuggle struggle struggle with candida. I have done several rounds of Diflucan with great success. The first round I lost 15 lbs. My naturalpath also put me on some heavy duty supplements. However, the minute I go off them, BAM, bloating blah blah blah. I am also pretty sure I have SIBO now as well. My question is about timing of the probiotic. Is there a better time in the day to take them? In the morning? Before bed? After not eating for a couple of hours??
