Nut Free Granola | Vegan, Easy, Gluten Free

April 23, 2026 by Amber

This nut free granola recipe has a delicious light and airy crunch thanks to the combination of rolled oats and brown rice krispies. Finding a good nut free granola that is still light and crispy can be surprisingly hard, especially without adding oils or nuts.

This granola is different from most recipes because it uses rice cereal to create a lighter, crispier texture without needing oil or nuts. It is naturally sweetened with maple syrup and flavored with vanilla extract and a touch of cocoa powder for a subtle chocolaty flavor that is not overpowering.

I made this granola recipe nut free as nuts are a common allergy for many kiddos, and for once I thought it would be nice to have a simple nut free granola for a change. I still like to add a sprinkle of chia seeds or hemp seeds when serving for a boost of healthy fats and protein, but that is totally optional.

My family loves this crunchy yet nut free granola with just a hint of chocolate flavor. I love a good chocolate granola, but my other recipe was a bit too chocolaty for my little girl. She loves slightly chocolaty granola bars, so I kept this one lighter with just a touch of cocoa powder, and she loves it. You can always add a bit more cocoa powder if you prefer a richer chocolate flavor, but this homemade nut free granola is a winner as is.

To make this granola gluten free, just be sure to use certified gluten free oats. Costco is great for purchasing gluten free oats and maple syrup at a good price. I used brown rice krispies, but any variety will work. The rice krispies create such a light and crispy texture that really makes this granola stand out.

If you are looking for a low fat granola without nuts, this simple recipe is for you. It only takes about 5 minutes to mix together and 25 minutes to bake. It also makes a large batch with roughly 16 servings, so you will have plenty on hand for quick breakfasts or snacks. I like to store mine in large mason jars for easy access.

Recipe For Nut Free Granola

6 cups rolled oats
6 cups brown rice krispies
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
3 tablespoons vanilla extract
1 cup maple syrup

How to Make The Nut Free Granola

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the cocoa powder with the vanilla extract and maple syrup until smooth.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the oats and brown rice krispies.
  4. Pour the maple mixture over top and mix well until everything is evenly coated.
  5. Spread the mixture evenly onto a large baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure even cooking.
  7. Let cool completely before storing.

Helpful Notes

You can easily adjust the chocolate flavor by adding a little more cocoa powder if desired, but keeping it lighter allows the vanilla and maple flavors to come through.

You can add dried fruit after baking or sprinkle in seeds like chia or hemp when serving.

Once the granola has cooled store it in a airtight container such as mason jars.
