Lactation Smoothie: The Best Green Smoothie for Breastfeeding and Weight Loss

October 21, 2021 by Amber

green lactation smoothie

This high protein lactation smoothie is the best green smoothie for breastfeeding moms to help support and boost breast milk production. It is packed full of protein from spinach, hemp seeds, pea protein, whey protein isolate and collagen powder.

I used a homemade sesame seed milk in this green lactation smoothie which is great for breastfeeding mamas as its rich in iron, magnesium, calcium and zinc.

I also added foods to support breast milk production such as oats, flaxseeds and brewers yeast. Brewers yeast and sesame seed milk is a bit bitter so I added dates to offset the bitterness and naturally sweeten this breastfeeding smoothie.

This green lactation smoothie for breastfeeding and weight loss is packed full of nutrients and foods to boost breast milk production, yet it is great for mamas who want to lose weight as it is low in saturated fats and contains healthy carbohydrates and protein to help meet the additional protein requirements during breastfeeding.

Growing a healthy baby and producing breastmilk requires additional calories and a nutrient dense diet full of vitamins and minerals that can be passed through the breastmilk and into your beautiful baby.

I remember a close friend telling me that breastfeeding takes it out of you and requires a very good diet, hydration and rest. I didn’t fully understand that statement until I became a breastfeeding mom.

Initially I felt like I had low milk supply but then it came in adequately and my gorgeous baby girl is a healthy, chunky baby right on her target weight plus one pound. I was lucky to have adequate milk supply for the first 6 months.

Around 6.5 months I felt like my supply dropped which could be due to my baby girl going though a phase of not being interested in food or breastfeeding but regardless I didn’t want my milk supply to dry up and I had lost an extra kilo below my average weight so I went to the health food store to purchase fenugreek tea to boost my milk supply.

I asked the naturopath at the health food store is she knew anything about boosting breastmilk production aside from fenugreek.

She asked about my protein intake and advised me on the extra protein requirements during breastfeeding. Since I eat a primarily plant based diet she suggested I add a protein shake to my diet with various protein powders to get all the amino acids into my diet.

I decided to make a green lactation smoothie using a combination of pea protein, hemp seeds, whey protein isolate, collagen powder and spinach which is an excellent high protein leafy green. The blend of these protein sources helps to meet the increased protein requirements during breastfeeding.

Adding flax, oats and brewers makes this the best green smoothie for breastfeeding moms to help boost breast milk production.
