Using your genetic testing results is not as simple as if you have this gene, you will have this problem or need this supplement.
Using your strategene report will take some education or professional advice to help you understand your unique genetic biochemistry.
The strategene report put together by Dr.Ben Lynch and his team will reveal information to help you optimize your health. At first glance, the strategene genetic test report may feel overwhelming.
That is because there are years upon years of research put into the diagrams and various pathways.
Our bodies are interconnected, your biochemistry is unique, and it will take some time to understand all how your body is connected. Looking at your genetic testing results from a holistic approach is needed to optimize your health.
If your ready to take the journey through personalized nutrition and cleaning your genes for optimal health, then genetic testing can help you identify where your genetic weakness lies.
When you know where your genetic weakness lies, you can support your genes. You can take the load off your genes and strengthen through providing nutritional and lifestyle support. The power lies with you!
To generate your strategene report, you will first need to order a genetic testing kit. When you get your results from a genetic testing company such as Ancestry DNA or 23 and Me, you will need to download your raw data.
Once you download the raw data, go to the Seeking Health website, and purchase the strategene analysis.
After purchasing strategene, you will receive an email where you will need to upload the file containing your raw data. For extra privacy protection, you can enter a nickname as the name on your report. Be sure to download and save your genetic report somewhere safe.
Ordering an at-home genetic testing kit is super easy. Anyone can buy a home genetic testing kit through Ancestry DNA or 23 and Me. I chose to do the saliva test through Ancestry DNA. You can order the Ancestry DNA test kit from their website located in your country or through amazon.
When you receive the genetic testing kit, you will be given step by step instructions on how to do your saliva test. You will need to secure it in the container provided. The provided instructions will tell you how to set up your free account with your email attached. You will be notified by email when your genetic results are ready.
After collecting your saliva sample, you will need to send it to the closest processing center. It can take anywhere from 1-3 months to get your DNA results back.
With Ancestry DNA, you will get to find out your ethnic heritage broken down into percentage and location. Pretty cool!
To analyze your DNA for health purposes, you will need to download your raw data from Ancestry DNA. This post walks you through how to find and download your DNA data.
Once you have downloaded your raw data file, you will then need to purchase the strategene report to get your detailed report.
The first page of the stategene report has symbols and colors indicating:
- What increases gene activity
- What decreases gene activity
- What the nutritional cofactor for the gene is
Each gene in the pathways is color-coded.
- Blue means no SNP data
- Green means wild type (you are the same as most the population)
- Yellow means heterozygous SNP (single mutation)
- Red means homozygous SNP (double mutation)
In the overview section, you will find all the genes tested in a row with the result revealing whether you have a single SNP, double SNP, or no SNP.
The stategene report provides 18 pages of information on various genes along with diagrams of the pathway in which the gene lies.
Now you may be wondering how can this help me? It is all about connecting the dots between your health symptoms and genes.
For example, if you have symptoms of histamine intolerance, it is helpful to know if you have genetic SNPs in the histamine pathway, such as the DAO gene.
The DAO enzyme degrades histamine in the gut and from food. If someone has SNPs in the DAO gene, they are more likely to experience symptoms of histamine intolerance, when eating high histamine foods.
The MAO B gene is involved in breaking down intracellular histamine inside the cell. SNPs in this gene can also make someone more prone to symptoms of histamine intolerance.
SNPs in the MTHFR gene or methylation pathway can make it more difficult for the body to make the methyl donor SAMe. The HNMT enzyme also helps to metabolize histamine and requires SAMe as the cofactor. SAMe is the nutrient needed for the HNMT enzyme to function.
Here is an example from my strategene report of what kind of information you can expect. In one section of the strategene report, there is information on the MOA B gene in which I have a single mutation.
In the second diagram, you can see the MOA B gene in the histamine pathway. The pathway diagrams are super helpful to see the various ways in which the genes interconnected.
If the COMT gene is to slow or sluggish, estrogen dominance can occur. High levels of estrogen can cause the sphincter of Oddi’s muscle to clamp down. This can lead to problems with releasing bile from the gallbladder.
SNPs in the SOD gene can lead to increased reactive oxygen species. Eating an anti-inflammatory diet can help to combat inflammation. Manganese found in blackberries in high amounts is the cofactor for the SOD2 gene.
Everybody needs to be avoiding environmental and toxic chemicals. But individuals with SNPs in the GSTP1 need to be extra cautious to avoid toxins that burden this gene.
If you have SNPs in the FADS2 gene, you may not convert plant-based omega 3s into EPA very well. Eating fish or taking fish oil supplements high in DHA may be necessary to have balanced fatty acids.
These are just some of the genes that the strategene report provides information.
If you are new to genetic testing, I first recommend reading Dirty Genes by Dr. Ben Lynch. This book provides information on seven crucial genes with actionable tips to clean your dirty genes.
No testing is necessary as this book provides you with questionnaires to help you determine which genes are dirty and how to clean your genes.
If you have your strategene report and would like some additional information, check out the courses listed below. I found them to be of extreme value to understand the various pathways.
The following courses will provide you with in-depth information to help you interpret and understand the strategene report. The dirty genes course is for the beginner.
The methylation and clinical nutrigenomics course is for the person who wants to understand the genes and various pathways in depth.
Doing genetic testing and using the strategene report will help you to understand your self on a very personal level. Everyone has a unique biochemistry. When you know your weakness, you can make lifestyle and dietary choices to optimize your genes and health.
