Charity Water: Why I Chose to Support Charity Water to Help People Access Clean Drinking Water

February 24, 2020 by Amber

Recently I was on vacation in Mangawhai, New Zealand renting an Air BnB with my family when we ran out of tap water at our air BnB. We had been warned that we were on rainwater and that the entire town was on water restrictions yet within 5 short days we had drained the remainder of the water tank.

Running out of water made me realize how important water is both for our health and daily functioning from cooking to showering and flushing toilets. Thank god we were able to order in a water tank but my sister reminded me that there are people in our world that still have to walk miles to haul water and drink water which is not suitable for drinking and filled with parasites. The water can be so dirty that I wouldn’t even consider swimming in it, yet these people have to drink this water as clean water is not available.

This sobering truth struck a chord in me as I watched a 20-minute video put together by charity water with my nieces and nephews on my lap. Approximately 1 in 10 people in our world today do not have access to suitable drinking. Drinking such dirty water that is filled with bacteria is the root cause of many health conditions and gut infections that can be prevented if only these people had access to clean water.

Some water borne illnesses found dirty water include cholera, dysentery, trachoma, bilharzia and many more which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain etc.

Water is the most important nutrient to the human body but also a universal solvent meaning that it is often filled with all sorts of parasites, bacteria, chemicals, and toxins. As humanity, we need to take care of the earth’s water supply while also ensuring that water is filtered for optimal health.

Those of us who are fortunate to have running clean water in our homes still have to ensure filtration of water as tap water can still contain chlorine, medications and heavy metals, but it breaks my heart that a basic human need of accessing clean water that is suitable for drinking is still not available for the entire population of our world.

As we live our busy lives in the modern world it is easy to forget how fortunate we are especially for those of us who do not have first-hand experiences of meeting villages of people who still do not have running water in their homes let alone clean drinking water.

Women and girls in these villages are often responsible for fetching the dirty water and as a result, young girls are trading in their education to carry water that isn’t even clean!

Sometimes all we need to make a massive positive impact in our world is to support the charities that have people with huge hearts and good intentions running the charity with 100% of donations going towards helping people access clean running water.

I dare you to watch this short video and if it touches your heart the way it touched mine take a minute to think about how you can contribute to charity water and help the entire world access clean running water.

Charity Water has some big goals which also means it’s gonna take a lot of us to join together to provide the support required to reach the goal of providing people of our world with clean running water that is suitable for drinking.
