How to Reduce Sugar Cravings and Become a Fat Burner Instead

April 20, 2018 by Amber

In general as a society we have shifted our metabolisms from having the ability to burn both fat and glucose as fuel to relying upon glucose only. Due to the avoidance of healthy fat and the increased consumption of processed sugar and refined carbohydrates the majority of people are sugar burners who experience intense sugar cravings and rely upon caffeine, snacks, sweet treats, fruit and refined carbohydrates to keep their energy levels up.

But it is possible to learn how to reduce sugar cravings and become a fat burner instead.
Fat burning vs sugar burning metabolism
If you find yourself in need of constant snacks, irritable if a meal is missed or delayed, have increased cravings for sugar and refined carbohydrates, insistent hunger, trouble burning body fat for weight loss and an inability to go more than 2-3 hours without snacking, you are most likely a sugar burning metabolism.Instead wouldn’t it be nice to burn fat instead of sugar to have long lasting steady energy levels though out the day, feel satisfied after eating with no cravings for sugar or refined carbohydrates and the ability to tap into fat stores for weight loss and sustained energy? This is what it is like to be a fat burning metabolism who has the ability to primarily use fat for fuel along with glucose.

Fat is energy dense and offers a slow burning source or energy while sugar and refined carbohydrates break down into glucose at a rapid rate causing energy spikes followed by the crash that leave you feeling irritable, tired, hungry and craving sugar once again. The body also does not like to have a rush of glucose into the blood stream therefor it will store excess sugar from the blood stream as body fat resulting in weight gain.

How to burn fat instead of sugar

In order to shift the body from being a sugar burning metabolism that runs on glucose to a fat burning metabolism that primarily uses fat as fuel start by ditching the refined carbohydrates, fruit juices, sugar, sweet treat etc.. and instead eat healthy fats with every meal, unrefined non starchy carbohydrates such as vegetables and quality protein.

How to reduce sugar cravings

As the body shifts from having the ability to burn fat for fuel as well as glucose and, blood sugar levels become stabilized by removing the high sugar foods and refined carbohydrates sugar cravings will start to disappear as the body  can easily burn both fat and sugar for energy.  Sugar cravings are often due to blood sugar levels dropping too low so the body is looking for a quick pick me up from sugar… but by removing the offending surgery foods that perpetuate this problem the body learns how to use both fat and healthy carbs for energy.

Fats also signals the feelings of satiety so by eating a little bit of healthy fats with healthy carbohydrates such as non starchy vegetables the body feels satiated and is getting the nutrients it needs from nutrient dense foods so it does not need to send out intense feed me sugar signals. Over time as processed sugar and refined carbohydrates are removed from the diet it gets easier and you will find that slowly but surely those sugar cravings will disappear and you will have plenty of energy on hand, will be able to skip meals even and tap into fat stores for energy.

Our bodies are designed to have the ability to  go for periods of time without eating and needing sugar from the diet but it is the modern day habits of eating high sugar snacks consistently that has caused the body to become dependent on sugar but just as this habit was created it can be reversed! Sugar is also very addicting which is why sugar cravings can be intense but as you train your body to become a fat burner and ditch the sugar you will be able to reduce your sugar cravings.

Utilizing nutrients such as the B vitamins and magnesium will help to utilize glucose in the body to provide energy. L carnitine transports fatty acids so that fats can easily be used as a fuel source by the mitochondria
