If you are looking for a warm, healthy breakfast that will energize you, this 5 minute chia seed porridge is for you! It is full of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats, which are healthy, plus it contains 20 grams of protein and anti-oxidant blueberries, which are among the best fruits for weight loss and fatty liver.
The chia porridge has been one of my toddler’s favorite breakfasts, especially with the addition of blueberries and a touch of pure maple syrup. Blueberries are her favorite fruit to add to her chia porridge, so I am all for it, as blueberries are phenomenal for a healthy liver.
This chia seed porridge is an easy breakfast recipe and a great way to start your day. It is a balanced meal with the essential omega-3 fats, protein, complex carbohydrates, and phytonutrients.
I grew up eating oatmeal for breakfast, as did my parents, which is a family tradition. But I usually always add chia seeds to porridge to amp up the protein and healthy omega-3 fats.
Ingredients for the chia porridge:
- 1/2 cup quick oats
- 1 cup water
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tbsp maple syrup (adjust to your preferred sweetness)
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 10 grams collagen powder (optional but adds protein and skin health benefits)
How to make the blueberry chia oatmeal:
Step 1: Prepare the Chia Base. In a small saucepan, combine the chia seeds and water.
Step 2: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
Step 3: Add the quick oats and almond milk once the water is boiling. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 3 minutes or until the oats are cooked and have absorbed most of the water. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Step 4: Sweeten to Taste. Drizzle the maple syrup over the chia oat base and mix well. Adjust the amount of maple syrup according to your taste preferences.
Step 5: Incorporate Blueberries. Gently fold the fresh or frozen blueberries into the chia porridge. The vibrant burst of color and juicy flavor will take this dish to another level!
Step 6: Optional Collagen Boost. Mix in the collagen powder to add some extra protein to your breakfast. Collagen is known for supporting skin, hair, and joint health, making this porridge even more nutritious.
Step 7: Serve and Enjoy. Your chia seed pudding is now ready. Transfer it to your favorite breakfast bowl and enjoy!
Optional additions and substitutions
Feel free to customize this recipe with your favorite toppings, such as sliced bananas, chopped nuts, or a drizzle of nut butter.
I also love adding ground sunflower, pumpkin, and flax seeds.
Hemp seeds are another fantastic addition, especially for increasing the protein content.
Ground cinnamon is a great option to add additional flavor and a natural sweetness. Plus, cinnamon is a fantastic spice to help lower blood sugar levels.
I often add a splash of vanilla extract to this chia seed porridge.
If you have a gluten sensitivity, use gluten-free oats to make this a gluten-free breakfast.
Macronutrient and nutritional value of this chia porridge
According to Cronometer, this warm chia porridge contains:
- 414 calories
- 19 grams protein
- 49 grams carbohydrates
- 11 grams fat
- 14 grams fiber
Of that fat content, 5 grams comes from anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats, which are essential and only contain 1.75 grams of saturated fats. Saturated fats are associated with an increased risk of developing fatty liver and insulin resistance, especially over-consumption. For this reason, I limit my intake of saturated fats.
This chia seed porridge is a great breakfast to kickstart your day with wholesome ingredients that will keep you satisfied and nourished until your next meal. Enjoy your nutritious and delicious chia porridge with blueberries, which are fantastic for weight loss!
