Hydrate your body with this watermelon electrolyte drink, made with blended watermelon, coconut water, and a dash of Himalayan rock salt. It is refreshing and the perfect homemade sports drink to quench your thirst with the essential electrolytes required for optimal hydration.

Watermelon and coconut water are among nature’s top hydrating fruits. They are the perfect combination to make your own homemade electrolyte drink with no artificial flavors or sweeteners. The natural flavors from watermelon make the best-tasting watermelon electrolyte drink.

A dash of pink Himalayan salt replenishes the body with trace minerals and sodium for proper hydration. Coconut water is a fantastic source of natural electrolytes, including potassium, which needs to be in balance with sodium to properly hydrate the body.

As soon as summer hits, I crave watermelon, as it is hydrating, crisp, and perfectly sweet. Since watermelon contains lots of water, it is a fantastic fruit to make an electrolyte drink. All you need to do is blend it up with a little coconut water and a dash of salt, then serve with ice cubes. It’s that simpe and you’ll have the best-tasting watermelon electrolyte drink in no time.

Recently, my partner just ran his first 100 km race, doing 10 km laps around a local lake. While he had himself prepped with electrolyte drinks, it was one of the hottest spring days we had, so I brought freshly chopped watermelon in a bowl for him to grab and eat while he quickly popped in to say hi and refuel.

Later, he told me that fresh watermelon was the best thing I could have brought him as it hit the spot and kept him hydrated and energized for the remainder of his race in the heat. The natural sugars in watermelon provide a quick energy source for the body while leaving you feeling light and energized.

I added a capsule of optimal magnesium to this watermelon electrolyte drink as it is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies required for energy production and 300+ functions in the body.

Magnesium is required for the utilization of glucose in the body, so I added it to help replenish this essential mineral, which is also an electrolyte, to help with the metabolism of the natural sugar found in watermelon and coconut water. A magnesium deficiency has been associated with increased insulin resistance and obesity.

Fresh watermelon juice and coconut water are fantastic sources of nature’s essential electrolytes to hydrate your body on a hot day. Coconut water and watermelon are abundant in hot tropical places. Nature provides what the body needs, and it is no surprise that watermelon grows in hot weather, providing rapid hydration when consumed.

How to Make a Watermelon Electrolyte Drink

  • Preparing this watermelon electrolyte drink is a breeze. Simply quarter a watermelon, remove the rind, chop it into smaller chunks, and place it in the blender.
  • Add coconut water, a dash of Himalayan salt, and a magnesium capsule if using, and blend until well combined.
  • Pour the watermelon electrolyte drink into a cup with ice cubes and enjoy immediately. It’s that easy!

Tips and Substitutions

Adding magnesium is optional but recommended to help replenish stores of this vital mineral, especially if using the electrolyte drink while running, as magnesium can help reduce muscle cramps.

This fresh watermelon electrolyte drink contains natural sugar sources, so no added sugar is needed. If you prefer a sweeter electrolyte drink, add a touch of honey or maple syrup.

I love the natural flavor of pure watermelon mixed with a dash of salt and coconut water, but for additional flavoring, you can blend in a few mint leaves or add a squeeze of lime or lemon.

Serve the watermelon sports drink with ice cubes for the most refreshing homemade electrolyte drink. Take the drink to the beach in an insulated water bottle with ice cubes to keep it chilled.

If you don’t have coconut water, you can substitute plain water. I added coconut water for its sweetness and electrolytes. If you want more liquid, add water instead, as too much coconut water in this recipe does not taste good. Half a cup is more than enough liquid to help blend the watermelon.

Choose a sweet watermelon to make your own electrolyte drink without refined sugar. Nothing beats the flavors of a perfectly crisp, cool, and sweet watermelon. This coconut water and watermelon electrolyte drink with a dash of salt and magnesium is a great way to replenish electrolyte levels lost during sweating in the heat or exercising.

This recipe yields two servings. According to Cronometer, each serving contains:

  • 2 grams protein
  • 16 grams carbohydrates
  • 0 grams fat
  • 70 calories

This watermelon electrolyte drink is not just a refreshing beverage, it’s a nutritional powerhouse. It’s packed with the two primary electrolytes, potassium and sodium, as well as minerals like magnesium and calcium. Plus, it’s high in B vitamins for energy production and vitamin C. It’s a delicious way to stay hydrated and nourished!
