This homemade applesauce recipe is perfectly spiced with cinnamon and naturally sweet from the apples and a touch of honey. Learning how to make applesauce from scratch is super easy and only requires 4 ingredients. Apples, cinnamon, honey, and vanilla extract makes the most delicious and healthy apple sauce.
I was inspired to make this cinnamon apple sauce recipe when I realized that I had some green apples that were starting to soften as they hadn’t been eaten yet. As I only like to eat fresh crisp apples (yup, I can be picky) I decided to make this homemade applesauce as a topping for this chia pudding recipe. Mmm so good! You gotta try it😊
The beauty about making homemade applesauce is that any apples will taste good, even the soft apples as they all get boiled down into mush anyways. So, if you have some old apples laying around don’t throw them out. Use them to make this easy applesauce recipe.
I added in a touch of honey to add a little extra sweetness but if you want to make a sugar free apple sauce just ditch the honey and it will still have a subtle natural sweetness from the apples.
Homemade Applesauce Recipe
4 large green apples (or any type of apples)
2 tsp cinnamon powder
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp honey
¾ cup to 1 cup water
How to Make Homemade Applesauce
To make this homemade apple sauce recipe start by using a small knife or peeler to peel the outer skin off the apple.
Cut the apple in half and half again into quarters. Once the apples are cut into quarters cut the core out of each quarter then slice into lengthwise slices and place in a medium-sized pot.
Add ¾ cups of water into the pot with the apples, cinnamon, vanilla, and honey, give a little stir then place a lid on top and place over medium heat on the stove. Bring the water to a boil before turning down the heat to a low simmer for 30 minutes and stirring occasionally to allow the apples to fully soften into perfectly chunky applesauce.
After 30 minutes turn off the heat and use a fork to further mash the apples into chunky homemade applesauce. If you prefer a smooth homemade apple sauce you can use an immersion blender to make the applesauce ultra-smooth but I prefer a little texture and chunk to this cinnamon apple sauce which I use as a topping to this apple pie chia pudding.
This easy apple sauce recipe can also be used as a gut-healing recipe to help heal a leaky gut or inflamed gut lining by adding in a scoop of optimal Gi or slippery elm powder to help soothe an inflamed gut lining.
