This healthy chocolate granola recipe is addicting! Recently I tried store-bought chocolate granola for the first time and to my surprise, I liked it better than regular granola. But it wasn’t the healthiest granola as it was quite high in refined sugar so I decided to make a homemade chocolate granola that is healthy and nutritious.
This chocolate granola recipe is coated with raw cacao powder, rice malt syrup, vanilla extract and coconut oil resulting in delicious and healthy chocolate granola that you, your kids or family are bound to love….. I mean who doesn’t love chocolate? Especially when you can have it for breakfast!
Because I am always thinking about the nutritional content of the food I added half a cup of ground flax seeds to get in a plant-based source of the essential omega 3 fats along with ground sesame seeds which is an excellent source of calcium required for healthy bones.
The addition of raw cacao powder which is a very good source of magnesium (the most common nutrient deficiency) makes this healthy chocolate granola a powerhouse of nutritional goodness that you are unlikely to find in any store-bought chocolate granola.
My favorite way to enjoy this homemade chocolate granola is with frozen blueberries and yogurt. For some reason, this combo just works, and I love getting antioxidants into my diet from blueberries and probiotics for gut health from yogurt.
This healthy chocolate granola is also tasty all by itself as a snack, with almond milk, mixed with banana and yogurt or as a crunchy topping to have on top of this paleo chocolate banana smoothie. Mmmm
Chocolate Granola Recipe
5 cups rolled oats
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup pumpkin seeds
½ cup ground flax seeds
½ cup ground sesame seeds
1 cup raw cacao powder
1 cup rice malt syrup
½ a cup of coconut oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of sea salt
How to make chocolate granola
Making this homemade chocolate granola is super easy! All you have to do is combine all the dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl including the oats, nuts and seeds and cacao powder then stir it with a large spoon.
To grind the flax seeds and sesame seeds you can use a coffee grinder or nut and seed grinder which is a super simple way to quickly grind up seeds!
In a small pot melt the coconut oil and rice malt syrup with the vanilla extract. Once the coconut oil is melted pour all the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients then stir with a big spoon until the chocolate granola is thoroughly mixed with the wet ingredients.
Line 2 baking trays with eco-friendly parchment baking paper then spread the granola out evenly between the 2 baking trays.
Bake this healthy homemade chocolate granola in the oven for 20 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. Be sure to set a timer for the ten-minute mark to stir the chocolate granola once halfway through baking for evenly baked and crunchy granola.
Once the chocolate granola is finished baking in the oven let it cool on the stovetop or racks on the countertop as you don’t want to overbake the granola.
Once the homemade chocolate granola has cooled store the granola in a reusable zip-lock back or in glass mason jars which is my favorite way to store all my nuts, seeds, grains, and homemade chocolate granola!
