With so many supplement companies and products claiming to be the best it can be hard for the consumer to know how to choose a supplement brand or what vitamins are worth taking. The quality of a supplement and the forms of the vitamins and minerals used determines whether taking supplements is worth your money.

Multivitamins are 100% worth taking BUT I would not waste my money on the cheap forms of nutrients that can be found in many multivitamins that are difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. I would prefer anyone to take a lower dose of nutrients from one of the best quality supplement brands than a higher dose from one of the worst vitamin brands that are using cheap forms of vitamins.
If money is a factor when choosing a supplement line or multivitamin (and let’s be honest, money is often always a factor to consider) I would still recommend choosing a supplement line with active bioavailable forms of nutrients even if it may be a tad more expensive…. just lower the dose. While I believe and see supplements being beneficial I don’t recommend or waste my money on cheaper forms of vitamins found in supplements.
How to Choose a Multivitamin
When determining whether a multivitamin is of high quality or a supplement line is good in general, I always look to see what form of B12 is used. The cheap inactive form of B12 is cyanocobalamin. If you see this cheap synthetic form of B12 don't waste your money. The supplement company is either unaware or cutting costs at the expense of your wallet and health.
To me using the cheap form of B12 in the form of cyanocobalamin says a lot about the ethics of a supplement line and how much they care about the consumer. Maybe their best interest lies in profits or they are not properly educated but when it comes to your health, I want you to be educated.
Better forms of B12 include methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
The second nutrient I always look for in a multivitamin to help determine the quality is whether a supplement line contains folic acid. Folic acid is the cheap synthetic form of B9. If this form of B9 is used you are looking at a cheaper less effective and problematic form of B9, especially if you have an MTHFR SNP. Instead, you want to look for methylfolate which is the active and most usable form of B9 by the body. Folinic acid is another good form.
While there are many different forms of each mineral and vitamin I always start with these 2 vitamins at first glance to determine whether a supplement or a multivitamin is worth buying. If a supplement contains the cheap forms of B12 and B9 I do not waste my money on purchasing supplements with these cheap forms.
Some other cheap forms of minerals that are not easily absorbed include magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate, and zinc oxide. Better more absorbable forms of minerals include chelates, glycinates, and malates such as calcium chelate, zinc chelate, and magnesium malate.
When looking at vitamin D you always want to look for vitamin D3 and not D2
